5 Fruits You Can Fire Up on the Grill

If you have a grill, you’re probably tired of the same-ole drill: burger and chicken and dogs (oh my). Thankfully, we have just the treat to sweeten that summer heat. Here are five fruits you can grill that will set your summer BBQ ablaze.

Now, before we dig in, there are a few rules you should follow to make your fruits positively perfect. First, let the fruit soak in water for 30 minutes; this will maximize the fruit’s moisture and make it easier to seal in the flavors and natural sugars when you grill. Second, brush the fruit with a light coating of olive oil or butter to add flavor and keep the fruit from sticking to the grill. Last, you’ll want to grill over medium heat  keeping an eye on it because fruit can be fickle.

Okay, now you’re ready to fire it up:

APPLES

Dig into this delish summer dish in a few easy steps. Cut the apples into thin slices leaving the skin on; add a touch of cinnamon or brown sugar; and then simply sit back and watch as the heat softens the fruit from the outside, sealing in the sweetness inside.

BANANAS

Bring people together over a grilled banana split. Cut a banana lengthwise; coat the inside with brown sugar and fill with mini marshmallows; and when the marshmallows start to melt, remove from heat. Next step: Enjoy.

COCONUT

The hardest part of this one is, well, the shell. Crack open the shell and grill the white side face down until golden brown. Then scrape the flesh away from the shell, dip in chocolate and enjoy a unique treat unlike any other.

PEACHES

Peaches, plums, apricots – really any of the stone fruits – are great for grilling. Simply cut in half keeping the skin on and add sugar to the grill side to create a caramelized concoction that pairs especially well with ice cream.

WATERMELON

Watermelon is hailed as the summer fruit. Chop into sections the size of your hand, making sure each is about ½ inch thick. Then, briefly grill on each side – just enough to get grill marks. Top it off with a little arugula and a beautiful balsamic drizzle for what we’re calling a “Slice of Summer Salad.”
